San José del Cabo

San José del Cabo Mexico Vacation Information and City Guide

The first community in Los Cabos, San José del Cabo was once the home to the local Pericú tribe, the stop for Spanish galleons and a hiding spot for pirates. It is famous for its authentic Mexican atmosphere, lovely architecture and picturesque streets surrounding a traditional plaza. Just 20 miles away from Cabo at the other end of the Tourist Corridor, this is a colonial town of tree-lined streets, pastel-hued historic buildings and a beautiful church facing the town square. San José’s pace is slower than that of its bustling sister city and is perfect for honeymooners and those seeking a more traditional Mexican getaway.

Accommodations range from graceful private villas overlooking the Sea of Cortez to breathtaking resorts. Along the sunny stretch known as the “Hotel Zone,” luxurious resorts line the warm sands. While this area is not recommended for swimming due to strong riptides and surf, it is a great area for sunbathing and strolling.  A few spots are also excellent for surfing.

At the end of the Hotel Zone, you’ll find the Estero San José, a beautiful natural palm-lined estuary rich in native bird life.

Downtown, San José has become renowned for its fine dining establishments. Many restaurants are housed in historic buildings with romantic courtyards. In the center of town, you can also explore the many delightful boutiques featuring arts and crafts, clothing and jewelry. During the months of November through June, the Thursday evening Art Walk is a great way to experience the numerous galleries of San José del Cabo.
