When most people think of Los Cabos, they think of Cabo San Lucas, the vibrant, bustling city located at the terminus of Mexico’s Baja Peninsula. Overlooking the much-photographed rock formations of Land’s End, including the famous stone arch, “Cabo” (as it’s often called) is known for exciting nightlife, great restaurants, luxurious accommodations, fun activities, and excellent sport fishing. It’s also known for attracting every kind of traveler, including families, couples, party-loving fun-seekers, and luxury-minded vacationers seeking the very finest.
There were approximately only 400 people living in Cabo San Lucas around the 1930s. At that time, it was just a quiet and sleepy fishing village with its own cannery. In the mid-20th century, visitors from the United States began traveling to Los Cabos for its outstanding fishing, with an abundance of marlin, tuna, and dorado (mahi-mahi) in the region’s waters. Los Cabos quickly acquired the nickname of “Marlin Alley.” During this golden era pre-dating international flights and the transpeninsular highway, some of Hollywood’s greats came to visit Cabo San Lucas in private yachts and airplanes. In 1973 the Transpeninsular Highway was finished. Today the stretch of highway between Los Cabos and San José is known as ‘The Corridor.” Soon after, an international airport was constructed in San José del Cabo. This improved accessiblity opened the door for thriving tourism.
Today Cabo San Lucas is the primary tourist destination of southern Baja, and it continues to grow in leaps and bounds. Spectacular resorts now line the coastline from Cabo San Lucas to San José del Cabo. Luxury villas have been tastefully built into the hillsides above the city in the prestigious neighborhood of Pedregal. Visitors who consider themselves “foodies” will enjoy the outstanding variety of international dining choices, from small local taquerias to gourmet award-winning fine dining venues. The main beach in Cabo San Lucas is Médano Beach and offers the area’s safest swimming. This is also an excellent spot to people watch, hop on a jet ski, go parasailing, or simply relax at a beachside cantina. Whether you want to dance the night away at one of Cabo’s hot nightclubs or sip a glass of champagne on a sunset cruise, you’ll find countless ways to relax and have fun in Cabo San Lucas.
