Health & Safety While In Mexico
Medical
treatment and dentistry are of relatively high quality in Baja's
cities. There are public IMSS clinics or Red Cross stations in
nearly every other town. If you are staying in Los Cabos, there
is a hospital in San José del Cabo. For information on air evacuation
services you can contact the Association of Air Medical Services
at 703-836-8732, email: information@aams.org. Their website is
www.aams.org.
Hotels
and restaurants in Baja serve only purified drinking water and ice,
so there is no need to worry or to have to order mineral water. Tap
water should not be consumed anywhere other than in the hotels. You
can buy bottled, purified water in all of the grocery stores. As for
the food, you may want to go easy if you are not used to spices and
rich food. Also stick to the restaurants and hotels rather than eating
food from street vendors, and you should be fine. Many "gringos" eat
street food without having any problems with it, but it is always a
good idea to be careful, especially if you have never visited Mexico
before.
Be
aware that the sun in Baja can be exceptionally strong, and bring
plenty of suncreen, a hat and sunglasses. More people are afflicted
with sunburn than any other illness while visiting. It is also important
to drink plenty of water since the climate is very dry most of the
time.
